Political Advocacy
District 3 supports Shannen's Dream, a campaign for safe, comfortable and equitable education for all First Nations children. As advocates for the students of Attawapiskat and all First Nations children, we have sent letters to: local2.ca, sootoday.com, the editor of the Sault Star, M.P.s Hayes and Hughes and to the Prime Minister. Responses have been received from the M.P.s and the Prime Minister.
Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA)
(Free trade agreement between Canada and the European Union)
There are concerns about the effects CETA will have on health care, education, pensions, and the privatization of water. RTO's provincial PAC has established 4 sub committees to monitor these 4 areas. Our federal government has offered little public information about the ongoing CETA negotiations.
Drummond Commission on Public Sector Reform
The Drummond Commission is reviewing all Ontario public services in order to significantly cut the provincial budget. The Ontario government has organized no public consultations. Drastic cuts to health care, education and social services are anticipated. A commission on Quality Public Services and Tax Fairness was set up by OPSEU and PSFC to provide opportunities for public input. The final report and recommendations are to be given to Premier McGuinty and Finance Minister Dwight Duncan in time for the provincial budget in the spring.
